As a JP you may make yourself available at a JP signing desk, at work, be contactable by members of the public and/or through a government or community service. The service you provide is very important and can have significant impact on your clients. It is incumbent upon you to ensure that you provide not only the best service, but also perform your duties correctly to assure the end user the documents are correctly witnessed and reduce the possibility of your client experiencing loss/damages or future difficulty when executing these.

Professional Development for a Justice of the Peace

Options for Professional Development

What can an JP do to assure that you provide not only the best service, but also perform your duties correctly to develop your skills and experience as a JP. JPs have differing; learning styles, needs, starting and end points. Therefore, it is necessary for you to map out your preferred approach using a subset of the solutions listed:

JP Handbook

Read and regularly review your JP Handbook. Once you become more experienced, critique the document and discuss any issues on online forums with other JPs and at your association group meetings.

JP Signing Desks

Volunteer to attend JP signing desks.

Proactive

Be proactive in your JP community. Actively participate in Group meetings, use of social media, ask questions, provide answers to other’s.

Trainer

Consider becoming a trainer for your association. The best way to learn is to teach.

Mentor

Find an experienced JP to be your mentor.

Volunteer your services to be a mentor for new JPs. This can range from just being contactable by phone/email to allowing a new JP to accompany you to a signing desk.

Formal Training

Participate in formal training provided by your association this can be online and/or face to face. You may investigate training available from 3rd parties. e.g. TAFE, or look for links on the ACJA website, or Google it.

Informal Training

Informal training can encompass a range of many different activities. All of those listed in this document plus others not listed. Identify a subset of these that fit your needs and preferred learning styles and document them in your development plan and put together a timeline that is achievable.

Self-Assessment

Perform a self-assessment to identify where you are. Some things you may already know but want to become more expert/experienced in, others you may feel you need to increase your knowledge and expertise. Use the ACJA JP self-assessment document to help you identify where you are in your life long JP learning journey.

Plan

Document a plan, using the ACJA template to map out your needs and approach to improving your skills as a JP.
